<h2 id="background">Background</h2><ul><li>Osteoporotic fractures, particularly among elderly and those with chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, highlight the need for personalized prevention strategies, including forhigh-risk groups like aged individuals and postmenopausal breast cancer patients on aromatase inhibitors.</li><li>Fragility fractures, including hip and vertebral compression fractures, can lead to serious health problems, such as impairing mobility, loss of independence, and overall quality of life, thus presenting a major public health challenge due to the increased risk of mortality, morbidity and healthcare costs.</li><li>Teriparatide, a parathyroid hormone analog, has been shown to speed recovery in elderly patients with osteoporosis-related fractures by improving bone mineral density (BMD) and reducing pain, which could improve activities of daily living (ADLs).</li><li>This study aimed to assess teriparatide’s effectiveness in relieving fracture site pain and improving ADLs, in patients with proximal femoral fractures.</li></ul><h2 id="methods">Methods</h2><ul><li>Retrospective cohort study.</li><li>150 elderly patients with proximal femoral fractures undergoing open reduction and internal fixation were enrolled.</li><li>Patients were categorized into two groups for 24 months</li></ul><figure class="image"><img style="aspect-ratio:927/204;" src="https://cdn.megawecare.com/GHBY/Internal-Images/patient-info.webp" width="927" height="204"></figure><h3>Assessment parameters:</h3><ul><li>Bone mineral density (BMD) and functional scores Barthel Index (Bl)and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for hip pain), were evaluated at 3 and 24 months post-surgery.</li></ul><h2 id="results">Results</h2><figure class="image"><img style="aspect-ratio:789/604;" src="https://cdn.megawecare.com/GHBY/Internal-Images/functional-improvement-of-patients.webp" width="789" height="604"></figure><h2 id="conclusion">Conclusion</h2><ul><li>Study results revealed the effectiveness of teriparatide in promoting recovery and<br>improving bone quality after hip fracture surgery.</li><li>Administering teriparatide every day for 18 months post-surgery for proximal femoral<br>fractures significantly had positive impact in very elderly patients by improving<br>functionality and bone density, with observed differences in recovery between genders.</li><li>These findings support the efficacy of teriparatide as a effective option for treatment of<br>osteoporosis related fractures in the elderly.</li></ul>
