Analysis of medication treatment for women with osteoporosis: A real-world retrospective study.

<h2 id="background">Background</h2><ul><li>Osteoporosis (OP) is a condition that reduces bone mass, microstructural damage to bone tissue, increased bone fragility, and susceptibility to fractures.</li><li>Osteoporosis and related fractures leads to increased rates of mortality and morbidity in postmenopausal women.</li><li>Treatment and prevention of osteoporosis often involve drug therapy as a primary method.</li><li>Different types of anti-OP drugs are accessible, and clinicians consider factors like the patient's age, disease history, and drug accessibility, as well as local economic status, when determining the appropriate treatment approach.</li></ul><h2 id="aim">Aim</h2><ul><li>This study aimed to analyze the current medication treatment status for women with osteoporosis (OP) based on real-world prescription data from 2016 to 2021 and systematically describe the medication treatment patterns in women with OP</li></ul><h2 id="methods">Methods</h2><ul><li>Prescription information for female OP patients was extracted from 150 Hospitals Prescription Analysis Collaboration Project Database of the Hospital Pharmacy Professional Committee .</li><li>Statistical analysis was conducted to evaluate demographic characteristics and medication treatment patterns.</li></ul><h2 id="results">Results</h2><ul><li>Total of 669,505 prescriptions was analyzed for medication treatment of female OP patients.</li><li>Majority of patients were aged 60 to 99 years (69.79 %) followed by 50 to 59 years (18.81 %) and 40 to 49 years (6.69 %).</li><li>Top three prescribed medications were active vitamin D and its analogs (40.78 %), calcium<br>supplements (32.51 %), and bisphosphonates (18.75 %). (Table 1)</li><li>Prescription frequency of menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) was 0.31 %. (Table 1)</li><li>Approximately 37% of female OP patients received monotherapy, while an equivalent proportion received two drug combinations therapy.</li></ul><figure class="image"><img style="aspect-ratio:707/269;" src="https://cdn.megawecare.com/GHBY/Internal-Images/frequency-and-percentage-of-prescription-drugs.webp" width="707" height="269"></figure><h2 id="conclusion">Conclusion</h2><ul><li>Predominant medications prescribed for this demographic included calcitriol, calcium carbonate with vitamin D3, and alendronate sodium with vitamin D3, while the utilization of MHT was relatively restricted.</li></ul>
