Anti glaucoma medications after pediatric glaucoma surgery

<h2 id="background">Background</h2><ul><li>Childhood glaucoma is a condition that can lead to blindness and responsible for almost 5% of childhood blindness cases globally.</li><li>For primary congenital glaucoma (PCG), medical treatment plays a supportive role by focusing on lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) and reducing corneal opacity prior to surgery, or to enhance IOP reduction after surgery.</li></ul><h2 id="aim">Aim</h2><p>Study helps to review the existing patterns for the addition of adjunctive medications after partially successful surgical procedures and to evaluate the safety and efficacy of these medications in IOP reduction.</p><h2 id="methods">Methods</h2><p><strong>Retrospective study</strong></p><ul><li>Study included 200 eyes of 152 patients, all patients had to be 12 years or younger.</li><li>Groups were divided accordingly into:<ul><li><strong>Group A</strong>: Timolol maleate 0.5% or betaxolol 0.5%.</li><li><strong>Group B</strong>: Latanoprost 0.005% and</li><li><strong>Group C</strong>: received either Dorzolamide 2%-timolol 0.5% fixed combination/ preparation or Brinzolamide l%-timolol 0.5% fixed combination/preparation.</li></ul></li><li>A mean follow-up period was 20.12 months</li></ul><h2 id="results">Results</h2><ul><li>All three groups had significant reduction in the IOP (Ps0.001), with the highest percent reduction attained in group C (Table 1).</li></ul><p style="text-align:center;"><img src="https://cdn.megawecare.com/GHBY/Internal-Images/iop-reduction-112541.png" width="876" height="500"></p><ul><li>The study recommends following flow chart (Fig. 1) for the treatment of partially responsive cases of childhood glaucoma to surgery.</li></ul><p style="text-align:center;"><img src="https://cdn.megawecare.com/GHBY/Internal-Images/management-112641.png" width="876" height="500"></p><h2 id="conclusion">Conclusion</h2><ul><li>CAI+ ß-Blocker combination is the most commonly used anti-glaucoma drug after<br>partially successful surgery.</li><li>CAI+ ß-Blocker appear to have the highest potency and are typically used as the first line treatment for the higher initial IOP.</li></ul>
