Review of consumption of fruit juice and risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus.

<h2 id="background-and-objective">Background and Objective:</h2><ul><li>Observational studies examining the relationship between fruit juice intake and the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM) have yielded inconsistent results.</li><li>A meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies was conducted to clarify this association.</li></ul><h2 id="methods">Methods</h2><ul><li>PubMed and EMBASE were searched from inception to August 3, 2024.</li><li>Pooled relative risks(RRs) and 95% confidence intervals(Cls) were calculated.</li><li>Fruit juice consumption was classified as 100% fruit juice or non-100% fruit juice.</li><li><strong>Primary outcome:</strong> Incident T2DM.</li></ul><h2 id="results">Results</h2><ul><li>Of 1591 records screened, 14 prospective cohort studies were included.</li><li>Overall fruit juice intake was not significantly associated with T2DM risk(RR, 1.06; P=.170).</li><li>Subgroup analyses revealed that,<ul><li>Non-100% fruit juice was associated with a higher risk of T2DM (RR, 1.15; P=.012)</li><li>100% fruit juice showed no significant association with T2DM risk.</li></ul></li><li>Increased T2DM risk related to fruit juice consumption was observed only in Asian populations (RR, 1.17; P=.023).</li></ul><h2 id="conclusion" data-section="conclusion">Conclusion</h2><p>Non-100% fruit juice consumption was linked to an elevated risk of T2DM, while 100% fruit juice showed no protective or harmful effect.</p>
