Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes - 2024 

A complex and chronic condition like Diabetes requires continuous medical care beyond glycemic management with multifactorial risk-reduction strategies. To empower people, prevent acute complications, and reduce the risk of long-term complications, ongoing diabetes self-management education and support are critical.The American Diabetes Association (ADA) “Standards of Care in Diabetes”, provides components of diabetes care, general treatment goals, and tools to evaluate the quality of care and is intended to guide clinicians, researchers, policy makers, and other interested individuals. Clinical guidance is added to the recommendations in the Standards of Care by the ADA Professional Practice Committee (PPC) which updates it annually and strives to include discussion and evidence of emerging clinical considerations. This is a living document which is published online where important updates are immediately included related to new evidence or regulatory changes such as drug or technology approvals and label changes. The Standards of Care is annually reviewed and approved by the ADA Board of Directors, reviewed by ADA staff and clinical leadership and also undergoes external peer review annually.The recommendations in the Standards of Care are known or believed to favorably affect health outcomes of people with diabetes and include screening, diagnostic, therapeutic actions, prevention, management of diabetes-associated complications and comorbidities. The recommendations cover the management of type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes mellitus, and other types of diabetes and/or hyperglycemic conditions and encompasses care throughout the life span for youth (children aged birth to 11 years and adolescents aged 12–17 years), adults (aged 18–64 years), and older adults (aged ≥65 years).
