Cirrhosis of the liver is caused by chronic and long-lasting liver diseases such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and fatty liver disease. Regular, heavy alcohol consumption can also cause cirrhosis. This condition leads to scarring of the liver which disrupts the normal flow of blood in the liver, affecting its function over time.
To check liver function, your healthcare provider may recommend a liver function blood test. This test measures the levels of proteins, liver enzymes, and bilirubin in your blood. An abnormal result may indicate a problem with your liver.
The blood test that shows liver function is commonly referred to as a hepatic panel or liver panel. It includes testing for several different components such as alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), albumin, and total protein among others.
Increasing blood flow to the liver can be achieved through various means such as maintaining a healthy weight, consuming a balanced diet, staying hydrated, avoiding alcohol and unnecessary medications, and engaging in regular exercise for liver health.
